Clause 2 of the Club’s Articles set out clearly the objects of the Club; namely to encourage the sport of rowing and not distribute profits or surplus other than in pursuance of its objects. The Club trains some 80 athletes each year broadly split 50:50 male / female. The objective is to achieve rowing and athletic excellence and many athletes achieve this as they progress through the junior ranks towards the top of the sport and represent the Club and Country in European and World Championships plus the Olympics. The Club has some 3,600 members and their subscriptions together with trading profit from the hospitality side of the Club go to provide the very best coaching, equipment, gym, training, camps and support of every aspect for the athletes. The Club is the most historic, prestigious and successful rowing club in the world, its athletes having won 159 Olympic and Paralympic medals since 1908. Sixty-two of these are Gold. Leander is not a grassroots rowing club, and neither is it the GB squad. The development programme coaches rowers to challenge for a place in the GB Rowing National Squads (the U23 and senior teams) and is committed to British Rowing’s World Class Performance Strategy. Leander Club is the ‘next step’ for individuals from all backgrounds and all corners of the UK who have been identified as having potential to perform at international level and acts as a springboard to prepare them for selection for the GB rowing team. In the past two Olympic Games the Club has won three times as many medals as the nearest UK rival. The Club values the individual athlete experience just as much as winning. Leander Club has no shareholders; there is a significant rowing budget that is funded by the membership and by the success of the hospitality programmes. The objectives are to run a high-performance rowing programme, feeding new talent into the British Team, and to create a ‘go to’ venue for all our members to enjoy all the year round.
