Foundation Executive - UK

Ian MacQuillin MCIoF(Dip) is the executive director of the Chapel & York UK Foundation, ensuring both the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the foundation and the smooth running of its governance processes and procedures. He is the director of the of the international fundraising think tank Rogare, which he founded in 2014, associate editor (ethics) of the Journal of Philanthropy and Marketing, and a member of the European Fundraising Association’s certification committee. Ian is acknowledges as one of the foremost authorities on the ethics of fundraising, having written academic journals and book chapters on the topic. He has devised a new theory of ethics specifically for application to fundraising. Called Rights Balancing Fundraising Ethics, this theory has gained considerable traction in the global fundraising profession. For example, it is taught as part of the syllabus of the Institute of Fundraising’s Certificate in Fundraising, incorporated into Scottish self-regulation, and forms a central plank of a new narrative for Canadian fundraising. Formerly a professional journalist, Ian has worked in the fundraising sector since 2001, first as editor of Professional Fundraising magazine from 2001 to 2006, then with specialist fundraising PR agency TurnerPR and as head of communications at the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association. He writes regularly for the global charity sector media, including a monthly column for Third Sector magazine in the UK, and has presented at most of the world’s leading fundraising conferences. When not thinking about fundraising, Ian follows both England and Ireland at cricket, and has forgotten more about The Beatles than you’ll ever know.
